G5 STEM Mentor team – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic.

Hello, I am Yanis and I am in stage four of an integrated master’s degree in Marine Technology with Naval Architecture at Newcastle University. In my third year of study I achieved a first class overall and won the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights prize for Best Overall Performance, as well as the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and BAE Systems award for Best Dissertation. My dissertation was based on a concept design study of using yacht style sails on commercial cargo ships to achieve a reduction in fuel consumption, so to decrease costs and carbon emissions.

Prior to this I went to a state comprehensive for secondary school where I achieved 6A*’s, 5A’s and a B. I competed in numerous Rotary public speaking and magistrates’ competitions and was elected as a student governor for two consecutive years. These grades allowed me to attend Welbeck Defense Sixth Form College where I studied A-Level Mathematics, Physics, Politics and AS-Level Chemistry; subsequently achieving an A*AB. Through the college I joined the Royal Navy as an officer on the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme, gaining training and funding for my studies while being in the reserves.

Outside of academia I am a keen yachtsman and sailor, competing for the British Army Offshore Sailing Team and having attended training and trials for Team GB in the new double handed offshore category being developed for the Paris 2024 Olympics. I am a nationally accredited Keel Boat instructor and Yacht Master Coastal, having led expeditions for numerous military units in the UK and abroad. I also played rugby at various levels, reaching the NatWest National Top 16 on two occasions. At university I am a student ambassador for the School of Engineering and the Science, Agriculture and Engineering Department; through this I have done numerous media events and public engagements.
